Tema: «Demographics, Market Power, Inequality, and Growth«
Presenta: Rafael Guthmann (UAH)
Across developed economies over the past several decades, there has been an increase in market concentration and inequality, as well as decreases in business dynamism, productivity growth, and the labor share. We develop a general equilibrium endogenous growth model and calibrate it to US data. This model suggests that demographic changes have brought substantial economic consequences and therefore explains a large fraction of them. In addition, our calibration suggests that demographics alone do not tell the whole story: institutional factors affecting the cost of firm creation and skill-biased technical change have worked in tandem with demographic change to help explain changes in markups, productivity growth, and income inequality. This reduced demographic growth, together with higher entry barriers and skill-biased technical change, reduce competition intensity and business dynamism, delivering fewer potential entrepreneurs to create firms, slowing productivity growth and concentrating income across households.
